Get to know, Ashley of Pima Dolls

We welcome, to The Hive this month the company Pima Doll. Spearheaded by Ashley Hamendi, it's a smart, fashionable  collection, made from Pima cotton and is now available at the shop. Here's a little about her, how she works and her company.

What do you design/make, & what materials do you use?
I make women's clothing out of pima cotton, mostly tops, dresses and leggings. We work exclusively with pima cotton which is known as one of the finest cottons in the world. It is a sustainable cotton by nature, and a long staple cotton grown without the use of harmful chemicals. The cotton is precious, therefore when we cut our pima cotton fabric we try not to waste it. Though almost impossible to reuse it all, we upcycle the large pieces by shredding them and knitting them into one of a kind hand knit pieces.
When did you start designing/making
Ive been designing and creating all my life. I believe the creative process is transmitted through all mediums. As a young person I was fascinated by clay and made utilitarian and sculptural vessels. Forever intrigued by the connection of form and function, my goal is to make something beautiful but also something that could be put to use. My designs are slowly getting out and I'm thrilled when I see a Pima Doll creation being worn! Since the product is made with super luxurious 100% natural pima cotton it is easy to wear and versatile, my hope is that my customer can be wear it to the gym , to the office and even out at night.

Is this your full-time gig? If not, how do you make time to create in your hectic life?
Luckily Pima Doll has been my full time job, for about one year. Im thankful that I can focus on Pima Doll since growing a business is an enormous amount of work, especially now with the internet and the social media. News is dispersed so quickly and products can be purchased in a few clicks. Internet has led to a frenzy of always needing something new and being constantly in touch.

What are you working on right now?
We are currently designing our fall collection for 2014, since its a winter collection we are working on how to double up our pima cotton fabric to create heavier and warmer pieces. We are also expanded our hand knit collection, which Im really passionate about. The hand knits are the antithesis of fast fashion, each are entirely made by hand and take one of our knitters a full day to create.
